Riddle Lake

A mysterious fog drifts across the shores of Riddle Lake, a remarkable body of water where all manner of fish can live. You can usually find them swimming in all directions–forward, backward, and even diagonally–but lately, something has been attacking the wildlife. The bodies of fish have been discovered floating in the lake with large chunks bitten from them! (HINT: The missing chunks each represent a letter, and you can't use a given chunk to mean more than one letter at the same time.) What could be causing this devastation?
